Sad to hear of the passing of that monumental musical talent Stephen Sondheim at age 91. But music/lyrics were not his only passion. As the Times of London noted...« Away from his piano and his scores, his primary passions were games and puzzles. He collected antique board games and in the late 1960s enjoyed a spell setting cryptic crosswords for New York magazine which allowed him to indulge his love of word play and anagrams. His own name, he liked to point out, provided two particularly handsome anagrams in “demonish” and “hedonism”.His love of game-playing was also the inspiration for the central character in Anthony Shaffer’s play Sleuth, which originally had the working title Who’s Afraid of Stephen Sondheim? and featured Sir Laurence Olivier in the part he had inspired in Joseph Mankiewicz’s 1972 film. » ...
