AKROPOLIS (Gigamic, 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up, 20-30 minutes; $29.99)

Often, I find, there are games which aren’t quite what I want them to be.  Now, I can’t always determine what it is I do want them to be – but I’m sure that what I’m playing isn’t that thing.  Such was the case with Cascadia – a very well regarded game, which won the Spiel des Jahres in 2022.  It’s a fine game, but – it’s really not what I want it to be.  The scoring is a little too much, and the importance of leaves (or fortunate draws) a little too high, leaving a game that I’m not drawn to.  But – I could not concisely articulate just what I wanted the game to be. Until, that is, I played Akropolis.
