Summer of ’69

 

It’s hard to realize but it’s been 40 years since the monumental Summer of 1969. Some of us have read about it; some of us have lived through it. Either way, the Summer of ’69 stands as a special season. Packed within those warm months were some pretty significant events. For example…

In July of 1969, dreams of all the people, past or present, who ever looked at the stars in the sky and let their imaginations roam free were realized as the first men walked on the moon! Even more remarkable, the entire scene was watched on television by millions on Earth! Shades of Star Trek!

The Woodstock Festival was held in upstate New York. Thousands (and it seemed like millions!) of people descended on the small community to hear and enjoy and party with some great musicians and artists ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and more.

The hapless and hopeless New York Mets, perennial cellar-dwellers of baseball’s National League who finished in 9th place in 1968 (and only a hair ahead of the 10th place Houston Astros), caught fire. By the end of the baseball season, that team would experience a Cinderella season to win the National League Pennant and then, faced against the very talented powerhouse that was the Baltimore Orioles, beat the Os in five games to become World Series Champions!

Space, the arts, sports. Such a wide spectrum of activities; such a wide selection of pivotal moments tucked into a few short weeks. Amazing. And yet, the same kind of thrill can happen every time you sit down at the gaming table.

There is no limit to what your imagination and skill can provide for you in terms of excitement, intellectual challenge and just plain old fun. You can journey into space, flex your artistic muscles, be a sports champion and more! As game players, we can sometimes take that for granted and not realize the power that gaming has. And it’s a power all to the good. Whether it’s feeling the adrenaline rush in the throes of a climatic game or pushing our intellects to their limits or just having a good old time with a bunch of buddies, games are one of the few things that can do one or all of the above. Remarkable, really. When things go right, diving into gaming can be just as fresh and refreshing as diving into a pool on a day as warm and memorable as that summer some forty years ago.

In this issue of GA REPORT, we ride with Bonnie and Clyde, visit a royal palace and, every day and night, try to make sure everything fits! Meanwhile, Andrea “Liga” Ligabue is off in space, Chris Kovac makes his point, Greg Schloesser explores a castle, Ben Baldanza sees stars and Frank Hamrick discovers it’s a small world after all! Plus the return of our Game Classics series! And, of course, much more!
